BPO Life

How is it to be a part of the fast-rising, multi-billion dollar BPO industry? Some people say that it’s toxic and very exhausting. So then, why is this industry attracting a lot of job hunters?

Let’s look into the life of BPO employees to shed some light on our curiosity with BPOs. The top BPOs in the country give opportunities to thousands of people. This is a high-paying industry. That is why people get attracted to this kind of job. There are other factors that employees experience in this industry, making the salary just one part of it.

Before we dig deeper with how life is in a BPO, let’s break the misconceptions about BPOs. The very common thing is that people think Business Process Outsourcing companies are just call centers. That is just one aspect of it. BPOs also specialize in other processes like web development, graphic design, legal processes, and research.

Another thing is that they say BPO workers follow odd schedules. Yes, at some companies but not all of them. It depends on the account they are working for. Some have graveyard shifts while some do not. Some also say that there is no growth in this career. That is not absolutely true. If you work hard and excel in this field, you can get promoted and you may achieve managerial positions.

Now, going back to the life stories of BPO employees, let us discuss the lifestyle that they have in this industry. Employees who work in graveyard shifts are perceived to have unhealthy lifestyles. They work when almost everybody else is sleeping. They drink too much coffee to stay awake and that is not good for their health. Some even smoke to at least release the stress they are feeling.

They know that those practices are not good but somehow it helps them survive the stress and pressures at work. They can avoid illness by simply taking care of themselves. They are encouraged to exercise, eat well and take vitamins. Some companies even provide health beneficial activities after work hours.

Every BPO company in the Philippines has different schedules depending on what services and country they are outsourced for. So when an employee is given a shifting schedule, he must make ways to adapt to it.

Sometimes, the time that must be spent with family and friends get compromised. But it’s all about a matter of time management. When schedules are made and followed, they can still have time for worthwhile activities with loved ones. There are companies that allow vacation leaves for their employees for at least twice a year.

Most of BPO employees are well paid, making them a part of the growing middle-class population in the country. Their spending habits show their affluence. They spend them for food and leisure. It is also common to see them at bars and grills for after-shift drinking. They see it as an outlet and a way to build teamwork with co-workers.

Like all other jobs, working in the BPO industry has its pros and cons. It will always be up to you if you want to venture into this industry. Your success will always depend on you.
